Some people can have more than one autoimmune condition. They are also often progressive, meaning they can get worse if not identified early and treated. These conditions can have severe implications for overall health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n The causes of autoimmune diseases are not fully understood but possibilities include genetics, hormones, reproductive health events like puberty, pregnancy, and menopause (which may play a part in explaining why these conditions are much more common in women than men), and viral infection.<\/p>\n More research is needed to help us to understand why more women than men are affected, how to prevent these conditions from developing, speed up diagnosis, improve treatment options, or even come up with a cure!<\/p>\n Rare Auto-Immune Rheumatic Diseases (RAIRDs), including Lupus<\/strong> and Sjogren\u2019s Syndrome<\/strong> affect approximately 9,500 people in Wales. At least 80% of those affected are female. overlooked because of outdated stereotypes and misconceptions of autism.<\/p>\n Around 1.1% of the population is autistic – that means 17,000 women in Wales could be autistic. It often begins with a referral from a GP or another healthcare professional to a specialist for a comprehensive assessment. This assessment is about identifying the condition and understanding its depth and breadth in the individual.<\/p>\n An autism diagnosis should be based on criteria listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) or the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11), according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.<\/p>\n Although many people (including most autistic people) do not consider autism to be a disorder, and autism is not a disease, these manuals are the standard classification ask for adjustments.<\/p>\n Mental health support needs to be adapted for autistic and neurodivergent people and needs to be provided by practitioners who have a good understanding of autism and
