December was Disability History Month, which saw a number of landmark events to mark the achievements of disabled people – and to keep the fight for disabled people’s rights at the forefront.
The Welsh Government’s Disabled People’s Rights Action Plan was published, and we’re delighted to share that as Chair of the Health and Wellbeing subgroup of the Disability Rights Taskforce, FTWW Vice-Chair, Willow, will still play her part in the implementation of the plan; all of the subgroup chairs have been invited to sit on the Disabled People’s External Advisory Board that will provide oversight as the plan is implemented.
Our friends at Disability Wales also held a launch event for their manifesto, ‘From Barely Surviving to Truly Thriving’, where FTWW’s Debbie spoke on the importance of involving people with lived experience of ill health and disability in all decisions affecting them. You can read both the manifesto and access DW’s commitment card, designed to hold political parties and candidates accountable ahead of the 2026 Senedd Elections and beyond, here.
Finally, FTWW Engagement Coordinator, Dee, was joined by FTWW Volunteer, Harriet, at Cardiff University’s Disability History Month event, where they spoke to students, staff, and attendees, as well as enjoying performances by UCAN. Panellists, Abi Lasebikan, Professor Debbie Foster, Joe Powell, and Rosaleen Moriarty-Simmonds OBE (above) held a powerful discussion on activism, empowerment, and the challenges faced by disabled people across Wales and beyond.
